SIT recreates crime scene in 2015 sacrilege, Behbal Kalan firing cases as probe gathers pace

Chandigarh: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the 2015 sacrilege incidents and the Behbal Kalan police firing case on Wednesday visited Burj Jawahar Singh Wala village in Faridkot district to recreate the sequence of events linked to the decade-old investigation.

Led by DIG Harjeet Singh, the SIT first inspected Burj Jawahar Singh Wala, from where a Sri Guru Granth Sahib saroop was reported stolen on June 1, 2015.

After completing its inspection there, the SIT proceeded to Bargari, where torn pages of Sri Guru Granth Sahib were found scattered in the village streets on October 12, 2015. The team was later scheduled to visit Behbal Kalan, where two Sikh protesters were killed in police firing on October 14, 2015, during demonstrations against the sacrilege incidents.

Officials said the SIT is recreating the crime scenes as part of its ongoing investigation to verify evidence and reconstruct the events surrounding the cases.

A chargesheet in the Behbal Kalan police firing case has already been filed against nine accused, including former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, former IG Paramraj Singh Umranangal, former Faridkot SSP Charanjit Sharma, and others.

The theft of the Guru Granth Sahib saroop from Burj Jawahar Singh Wala, the subsequent sacrilege at Bargari, and the police firing at Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan triggered widespread protests and political turmoil across Punjab. The cases have remained a major political and legal issue, with successive governments facing pressure to ensure justice.

The SIT’s latest field inspection is aimed at strengthening the investigation by examining the locations firsthand as the probe into the nearly decade-old cases continues.
