New Delhi: Supreme Court of India has refused to grant an urgent hearing on a public interest litigation seeking action against the social media-based group Cockroach Janta Party, which recently gained attention online.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said the matter would be listed for hearing in the normal course as per the regular judicial process.
During the proceedings, the bench advised petitioner’s counsel N. K. Goswami not to become overly emotional about the issue. The court observed that there was no extraordinary urgency or emergency in the matter that justified giving it priority over other pending cases.
The petition, filed by advocate Raja Chaudhary, alleged that certain remarks and observations made earlier by the Supreme Court were being misrepresented on social media platforms. The petitioner’s counsel argued that despite clarifications issued by the Chief Justice, the court’s comments were allegedly being distorted and circulated in a misleading manner.
The plea further claimed that digital groups such as Cockroach Janta Party were allegedly using the controversy to gain online popularity, attract followers, sell merchandise and generate commercial profits through viral content.
