Jalandhar: The withdrawal of security for Harbhajan Singh after his exit from the Aam Aadmi Party and entry into the Bharatiya Janata Party has triggered a major political controversy in Punjab.
Leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal have strongly criticised the move, calling it an act of “political vendetta” by the state government.
Opposition slams ‘revenge politics’
Akali Dal leader Gurkirpal Singh Sidhu condemned the decision, alleging that the AAP-led Punjab government targeted Harbhajan Singh for switching sides.
The development comes shortly after Harbhajan, along with several other MPs, resigned from AAP and joined BJP.
Centre steps in with CRPF cover
According to sources, soon after the state security was withdrawn, the Centre intervened and provided protection to Harbhajan Singh through the Central Reserve Police Force.
The episode has further escalated tensions between political parties in the state, with accusations and counter-accusations intensifying ahead of upcoming elections.
