Chandigarh: A tense situation unfolded at the Chandigarh-Punjab border on Friday after hundreds of farmers, marching towards the Raj Bhavan under the banner of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, were stopped by Chandigarh Police at the border barricades.
The situation escalated when protesting farmers allegedly tried to remove heavy barricades and force their way into the city. Police responded with a mild baton charge and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
According to reports, several farmers sustained injuries during the clash.
Farmers from different parts of Punjab had planned a march towards Raj Bhavan to press for various demands. Large numbers of protesters arrived in tractor-trolleys and vehicles before being halted at multiple checkpoints set up along the Chandigarh border.
A heated argument between farmers and police soon turned chaotic as protesters attempted to breach security barricades. Police initially used water cannons to stop the advancing crowd, leading to panic and confusion at the protest site.
During the scuffle and heavy water spray, several farmers — including elderly protesters — reportedly lost their turbans amid the chaos.
As tensions further intensified, police resorted to lathi-charge and fired additional tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
