Chandigarh: Farmers protesting over MSP, loan limits and other pending demands clashed with police at the Mohali border on Friday while attempting to march towards the Punjab Raj Bhavan.
In view of the protest, traffic was diverted at two major border points connecting Chandigarh and Mohali.
Chandigarh Police sealed all entry points from Punjab by installing heavy barricading. Protesters allegedly tried to jump over the barricades, following which police used tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
As the protesters continued advancing, police also deployed water cannons to push them back.
Police officials said the situation was being closely monitored and senior officers, including the SSP, were present at the spot to oversee security arrangements.
Farmers raise multiple demands
The protesting farmers are demanding:
Legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) on all crops
Restoration of cancelled cooperative loan limits
Full electricity supply and canal water during the paddy season
Withdrawal of the proposed Electricity Amendment Bill 2025 and Seed Law 2025
Distribution of river waters according to the riparian principle
Scrapping of certain provisions of the Punjab Reorganisation Act
The protest once again intensified tensions along the Punjab-Chandigarh border as farmer unions continued pressing the Centre and state authorities over agricultural and economic issues.
