Toronto: Two Punjabi youths living in Canada have been arrested and charged under criminal offences following an investigation by the Surrey Police Service into a shooting incident linked to an alleged extortion threat.
According to SPS, the incident took place around 12:40 am on April 22, when frontline officers responded to reports of gunfire at a residence in the 13400 block of 87A Avenue in Surrey. Police confirmed damage to the house and a vehicle parked outside, although no injuries were reported.
The investigation was later taken over by the Extortion Response Team, which identified a suspect vehicle and carried out a search warrant at a Surrey residence with assistance from the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team, the Canada Border Services Agency and other SPS units.
Accused identified, court dates announced
Police said two men were arrested and charged with multiple offences.
Twenty-two-year-old Damanjeet Singh has been charged with discharging a firearm and possessing a prohibited or restricted weapon without a licence.
Thirty-year-old Pardaman Singh is facing similar charges.
Both accused have been remanded into custody. Damanjeet Singh is scheduled to appear in court on May 19, 2026, while Pardaman Singh will appear on June 1, 2026.
CBSA involved as probe widens
The Surrey Police Service confirmed that both accused are foreign nationals and that the Canada Border Services Agency has been involved in the case.
Police also released photographs of the accused, stating that disclosure was necessary to support the ongoing investigation. Authorities have appealed to witnesses, victims and associates to come forward with information that could help expose criminal networks involved in violent extortion activities targeting South Asian communities.
The development comes shortly after the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) issued a special bulletin warning about organised gangs allegedly using financially vulnerable young Indian nationals studying in Canada as “foot soldiers” in extortion and violence-related crimes across the country.
