Rupnagar: BJP MP Anurag Thakur on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Bhagwant Mann government over the drug problem in Punjab, saying the state would have to become “Aam Aadmi Party-free” to become “drug-free”.
Thakur, a former Union minister, was addressing a gathering during the BJP’s ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’ in Rupnagar. He also claimed that only the BJP could save the border state from the drug menace.
He said making Punjab drug-free was necessary to protect India’s youth and fulfil the vision of a developed India.
The BJP has launched four anti-drug yatras from different parts of Punjab. The 13-day campaigns will cover all 117 assembly constituencies and travel around 4,000 km across the state. At the conclusion of the four yatras, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to address a rally in Jalandhar on September 30.
During his address in Rupnagar, Thakur criticised the AAP government for allegedly failing to curb the drug problem. He alleged that drugs were being openly sold in the state and claimed, “Home delivery of drugs is taking place in Punjab.”
He questioned why the AAP government had failed to eliminate drugs despite repeatedly setting deadlines for doing so.
Thakur also alleged that the AAP had promoted a “liquor culture” in Delhi and had now pushed Punjab into a “drug swamp”. Targeting the Mann government, he claimed that people raising their voices against drug sales in their areas were being threatened.
He further claimed that Punjab was facing a growing drug crisis and alleged that criminal networks and administrative indifference had made the situation more serious.
