Chandigarh: The Punjab School Education Department has issued strict directions restricting the deployment of school teachers and lecturers for non-teaching and administrative duties, with the aim of protecting classroom teaching and students’ academic interests.
In an official letter sent to all deputy commissioners across the state, the School Education Secretary directed district and sub-divisional authorities to ensure that teachers are not assigned surveys, verification work or other administrative duties.
The department said repeatedly assigning teachers to non-academic work seriously affects classroom teaching, academic continuity and students’ overall learning outcomes.
Referring to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which is scheduled to conclude on September 30, the state government acknowledged that teachers had extended full cooperation with the legal process.
However, it stressed that their continued deployment beyond what is necessary should be reduced so that teachers can return to their primary responsibility of teaching.
