No agreement reached at second meeting with Jhotta’s family

Mansa: A second meeting between a three-member committee of women IAS officers appointed by the Punjab government and the family of slain anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhotta ended without an agreement on Wednesday, despite assurances on several demands.

The meeting, held at the District Parishad Hall in Mansa, was convened to help resolve the impasse over Jhotta’s postmortem and last rites. Members of the action committee formed over his killing and family members also attended.

During the meeting, the government announced compensation of ₹5 lakh each for the four people injured in the incident. The government had earlier announced that it would bear their medical expenses.

Officials also assured the family that police cases registered against Jhotta and his father, Bhim Singh, in connection with their anti-drug campaigns and allegations of tearing flex boards would be withdrawn. However, the family and the action committee reiterated their demand that the entire case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and no consensus was reached.

Mansa deputy commissioner Navjot Kaur, Apneet Riyat, Kanwalpreet Kaur Brar, DIG Harjit Singh, SSP Vaibhav Chaudhary and other senior officials attended the meeting.

Meanwhile, DSP Harjinder Singh Gill and drug inspector Naresh Kumar have been suspended in connection with the case, DIG Harjit Singh confirmed.
