Newyork: Indian-origin politician Zohran Mamdani has won the Democratic mayoral primary of New York City, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo by 12 percentage points.
The new vote count released on Tuesday confirmed Mamdani’s victory after the city’s ranked choice voting tabulation was completed, the Associated Press reported.
Mamdani expressed gratitude for the support she received during the primary.
“Last Tuesday, Democrats spoke in a clear voice and gave a mandate for a leader who fought and was not afraid of a pro-budget city, future politics and rising authoritarianism,” she said in a statement.
