NHAI to blacklist loose FASTags to ensure smooth tolling operations

New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Friday said it has strengthened the reporting process for loose FASTags to ensure smooth tolling operations across the country. Loose FASTags refer to those that have not been pasted on a vehicle’s windscreen.

“In view of upcoming initiatives such as the annual pass system and multi-lane free flow (MLFF) tolling, it is necessary to ensure the authenticity and system reliability of FASTag,” the agency said in a statement.

The NHAI said it has streamlined its policy for toll collection agencies and concessionaires to immediately report and blacklist such loose FASTags, also known as ‘tag-in-hand’.

The agency noted that some highway users deliberately avoid installing FASTags on their vehicle’s windscreen, creating operational challenges that lead to lane congestion, false chargebacks and misuse of closed-loop tolling systems.

“This disrupts the electronic toll collection framework, resulting in unnecessary delays at toll plazas and inconvenience to other commuters,” the NHAI said.
