Chandigarh: The Privilege Committee of the Haryana Assembly held its first meeting on Tuesday to hear the case of alleged assault on Congress MLA Ashok Arora.

Committee chairman Mool Chand Sharma said the committee took information and evidence from Arora during the meeting. “This is a sensitive matter, and the committee will take an impartial decision based on facts,” Sharma said.

The committee will now issue notices to around half a dozen officers, including the executive officer (EO), against whom complaints have been made in connection with the case. They are expected to be summoned by the end of this month.

Sharma also informed that a total of four such complaints are pending with the committee and all will be heard and decided soon.

The case relates to a scuffle that broke out two months ago between Congress MLA Ashok Arora and BJP councillor representative Narendra Sharma during a house meeting of the Thanesar Municipal Council in Kurukshetra, Haryana. Outsiders, councillor representatives and media were not allowed inside the meeting.

As the meeting began, Arora objected to Sharma’s presence, leading to an argument between the two.

Sharma insisted that councillor representatives had attended previous meetings and refused to leave, following which both men stood up and a scuffle broke out. Arora’s gunmen later entered the hall and escorted the MLA out of the meeting.
