Army chief likens ‘Operation Sindoor’ to a chess game, calls it a lesson in the ‘grey zone’

New Delhi: Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Sunday said that ‘Operation Sindoor’ was unlike any conventional military mission and was akin to a chess game where the enemy’s next move was unknown.

Speaking at an event at IIT Madras, he recalled the complexities of the decisive military action in May that targeted terror infrastructure in retaliation to the April 22 Pahalgam attack.

“In Operation Sindoor, we played chess. This means that we did not know what the enemy’s next move would be or what we were going to do. This is what we call the ‘grey zone’,” he said.

Explaining the concept, General Dwivedi said that unlike traditional operations — where forces seize objectives with the option to return or hold ground — grey zone warfare involves unconventional, unpredictable activities across multiple domains.

“‘Operation Sindoor’ has taught us that this is the grey zone,” he added.
