New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh triggered a political storm on social media with his first major political post after recently joining the Bharatiya Janata Party from the Aam Aadmi Party nearly three weeks ago.
Harbhajan shared a video on X related to an alleged abduction of a four-year-old child in Kurali and wrote, “What is happening in Punjab? I request the Punjab DGP to look into this matter and help the family.”
Reports later suggested that the matter appeared linked to a marital dispute and child custody issue, but Harbhajan’s post quickly drew political reactions online.
An author and blogger based in the United States responded by saying Harbhajan should first question his “new political family” over issues such as inflation, rising LPG prices, unemployment and unfulfilled promises made to farmers before lecturing Punjab.
Responding to the criticism, Harbhajan wrote that the issue was about humanity and not politics. He questioned whether the incident shown in the video could be considered acceptable and urged people to stand for what is right.
Following his reply, several AAP supporters criticised him online. Some users questioned his silence over crimes in BJP-ruled regions, while others accused him of ignoring issues such as the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy.
One user even called him a “traitor,” alleging that he had abandoned the trust of Punjab’s people for personal interests.
Earlier in the day, Harbhajan had also reposted a message from fellow Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney highlighting Punjab’s rising debt burden.
The post claimed that despite Punjab’s total debt crossing ₹5 lakh crore, the state government had borrowed another ₹2,500 crore from the market while around seven lakh government employees and pensioners were still waiting for nearly ₹15,000 crore in pending dearness allowance dues despite directions from the court.
