NHRC takes suo motu cognizance of journalist assault in Punjab, seeks report from DGP

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report about a journalist allegedly assaulted by two Punjab Police officers in the Batala area of Gurdaspur district.

In a video grab of the incident, the journalist was seen lying motionless as the policemen walked away after the assault. The Commission said that if true, the contents of the report raise serious concerns of human rights violation.

The NHRC has issued a notice to the Punjab Director General of Police, seeking a detailed report within two weeks. The report is expected to cover the status of the investigation as well as the health condition of the victim.

According to reports published on August 7, the incident took place on August 1, when the two police officers were deployed in Batala for law and order duty ahead of Independence Day. The journalist had reportedly questioned them about their presence, which allegedly enraged the officers and led to the assault.
