Chandigarh: A delegation of the Media Wellbeing Association (MWBA) met Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and submitted a memorandum seeking pension, healthcare benefits, accident insurance and other welfare measures for journalists in the state.

The delegation, led by MWBA North India president Chandrashekhar Dharani, urged the state government to introduce a comprehensive journalist welfare policy on the lines of Haryana. The delegation included general secretary Surender Mehta, treasurer Tarun Kapoor, Himachal in-charge Sanjay Bhutani, senior vice-president Pawan Chopra, organisation secretary Mewa Singh Rana and MWBA Himachal president Vishal Sood. The meeting was facilitated by the chief minister’s principal media adviser Naresh Chauhan.

The association highlighted issues related to journalists’ social security and welfare, stating that media professionals play a crucial role in strengthening democracy but often lack adequate financial and social protection.

Proposal for AI training camp in Manali

MWBA also proposed organising a three-day Artificial Intelligence (AI) training camp for journalists and media professionals in Manali. The programme aims to equip participants with skills related to AI-driven journalism, including news gathering, data analysis, fact-checking, content creation and digital media management.

The delegation invited Chief Minister Sukhu to attend the event as chief guest. According to the association, the chief minister has accepted the invitation, while the final schedule for the programme will be announced later.

Free accident insurance for journalists

The association also announced plans to provide free personal accident insurance coverage of up to ₹10 lakh for journalists and media professionals in Himachal Pradesh. The initiative has already been launched from Shimla and is expected to benefit media workers across the state.

MWBA representatives said journalists often work in challenging and risky conditions, making accident insurance an important safety measure for them and their families.

Government’s response positive

After the meeting, Chandrashekhar Dharani said the state government’s response was encouraging. Principal Media Adviser Naresh Chauhan assured the delegation that the issues raised would be examined seriously and that the government remained sensitive to matters concerning journalists’ welfare and professional development.

Dharani said the association’s objective was not only to raise journalists’ concerns but also to promote their skill development, social security and professional growth. He expressed hope that with government support, new opportunities and welfare initiatives for journalists in Himachal Pradesh would be introduced in the near future.
