Rahul Gandhi meets flood victims in Punjab, visits affected villages

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi began his two-day visit to Punjab on Monday to meet people affected by recent floods.

He arrived at Amritsar airport around 9:30 am and proceeded to Gonewal village, where he interacted with residents whose crops and homes were submerged. He also paid obeisance at Gurudwara Beed Baba Buddha Sahib.

Later, Gandhi reached Gurchakk village in Gurdaspur district, where a dam breach had flooded fields and houses. He met local farmers, walked through the affected areas, and briefly rode a tractor before returning to his car parked nearby. He did not speak to the media during his visit.

Currently, the Congress leader is in Dinanagar, continuing interactions with flood victims. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa accompanied him.

According to official figures, floods have impacted 2,097 villages across 23 districts, submerging nearly 1.92 lakh hectares of crops. At least 52 people have died in 15 districts.

Six days earlier, PM Narendra Modi had visited Punjab and announced ₹1,600 crore in relief aid. The Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government, however, called the amount insufficient.
