Rahul Gandhi accuses Election Commission of shielding ‘vote thieves’

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday sharpened his attack on the Election Commission, accusing it of acting as an “election chowkidar” that “watched thefts happening even while awake and protected thieves.”

His remarks came a day after he criticised Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission over what he called “vote theft.” At a press conference on Thursday, Gandhi alleged that the poll body was “destroying democracy” and safeguarding “vote thieves.”

He cited data from a Karnataka assembly constituency to claim that votes of Congress supporters were being systematically removed.

The Election Commission dismissed the allegations as “false and baseless,” saying, “No vote can be deducted online by any common man, as alleged by Gandhi.”
