California: In a historic decision for the Indian diaspora, California has officially recognized Diwali as a public holiday, becoming the third state in the US to do so.
Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Tuesday that he signed a bill introduced by Assemblymember Ash Kalra to declare Diwali a public holiday. The bill, AB 268, had been successfully passed by both houses of the California Legislature and was awaiting the governor’s signature.
