Jalalabad traders observe shutdown over police inaction after shop set on fire

Chandigarh: Shopkeepers in Jalalabad town observed a complete shutdown on Saturday to protest against the alleged police inaction in a recent incident where unidentified miscreants set a shop ablaze.

All markets in the city remained closed as traders demanded strict action against those responsible and called for immediate measures to ensure the safety of business establishments.

The incident took place on the intervening night of October 8 and 9, when two motorcycle-borne miscreants allegedly poured petrol on a three-storey cloth shop on Railway Road and set it on fire.

Babbu Doda, president of the Chamber of Commerce in Jalalabad, said traders had warned the police to arrest the culprits within two days, failing which they would close their shops in protest.

“After a meeting on Friday evening, all union representatives associated with the Chamber of Commerce decided to shut down their shops on Saturday as a mark of protest,” Doda said, adding that the traders demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits and assurance of security for the business community in Jalalabad.
