AMRITSAR: The Golden Temple was illuminated with 1 lakh ghee lamps on Tuesday as devotees observed Bandi Chhor Diwas with devotion and festivity. Candles were also lit around the sacred lake, creating a mesmerising view.
A grand display of green fireworks lit up the sky later in the evening, keeping in mind the need to control pollution. Around 3 lakh devotees thronged the Golden Temple to mark the occasion.
Giani Raghbir Singh, head granthi of the Golden Temple, said Bandi Chhor Diwas is not only a festival of light but also a symbol of freedom and justice.
The day commemorates Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji’s release from Gwalior Fort along with 52 kings. Upon his return to Amritsar, the devotees celebrated by lighting ghee lamps and setting off fireworks, a tradition that continues every year.
Meanwhile, political leaders and Punjabi singers also joined in the celebrations of Bandi Chhor Diwas and Diwali across Punjab.
