GURDASPUR: Seven people were injured in an explosion while attempting to make Diwali firecrackers using sulphur-potash powder in Dharamdad village of Dera Baba Nanak on Wednesday.
Police officials said all seven sustained serious injuries and were initially rushed to the Civil Hospital in Dera Baba Nanak. They were later referred to a private hospital in Amritsar for advanced treatment due to their critical condition.
Two of the injured are women, an official said. “They were tampering with highly explosive sulphur-potash powder while trying to make firecrackers. The blast was so powerful that windshields of nearby houses were shattered or developed major cracks. There is a high risk of accidental explosions if the powder is mishandled,” the official added.
Station House Officer (SHO) of Dera Baba Nanak, Ashok Sharma, along with a police team, reached the spot and launched an investigation into the incident.
