Anti-drug vow: Capt Amarinder breaks silence on taking oath on Gutka Sahib

Chandigarh: Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh broke his silence on Thursday over the Opposition’s criticism regarding the Gutka Sahib case and a social media post he had shared in support of Bikram Singh Majithia. Speaking to reporters in Moga, Captain Amarinder recalled taking an oath on Gutka Sahib at Talwandi Sabo during his tenure, pledging to eradicate drugs and protect Punjab’s youth.

Terming the Opposition’s attacks as “political rhetoric,” he said that his government had managed to curb the drug menace to a considerable extent. “The jails were overcrowded with smugglers, and we had to release petty criminals. Majithia was not my relative; he had only questioned the state government’s actions by sharing that post,” Captain Amarinder said.

Commenting on the BJP’s political prospects, he said that the decision on alliances in Punjab rested with the party’s national leadership. “The way a large number of people are joining the BJP in Punjab today, we may not need an alliance,” he added.

Questioning the current law and order situation, Captain Amarinder said, “I had put the gangsters in jail and straightened them out, but now they are roaming freely.” He accused the Bhagwant Mann-led government of being afraid of the BJP’s growing connection with the people of Punjab.
