NEW DELHI: Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha on Monday evening detailed what happened during the powerful explosion near the Red Fort metro station that left 10 people dead and 12 others injured.
Golcha said the blast occurred at 6:52 pm when a car stopped at a red light near Gate No. 1 of the metro station. “There was a sudden explosion in the vehicle while people were inside. The blast was so powerful that it also set nearby vehicles on fire,” he said.
He added that multiple investigation teams were immediately dispatched to the site. “All agencies, including the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA), are present here. Some people have died and some have been injured. The situation is being monitored continuously,” Golcha said.
The Commissioner further stated that the explosion was confined to one vehicle but caused extensive damage to others parked nearby. “The blast took place in the same vehicle, and nearby vehicles were damaged due to its intensity,” he explained.
Golcha confirmed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been briefed about the situation and that information is being shared with the Ministry of Home Affairs regularly.
Officials said the impact of the explosion shattered the windshields of vehicles parked several metres away, and the sound of the blast was heard in nearby buildings, creating panic in the crowded area.
