Chandigarh: The Election Commission of India has summoned the Punjab Director General of Police on November 25 over nine FIRs registered against Shiromani Akali Dal workers during the Tarn Taran bypoll campaign, according to sources.
Officials told media that the summons were issued after the commission reviewed the report submitted by the DGP a day before the bypoll results were declared on November 13.
The FIRs were registered in a coordinated manner at four locations in Punjab — Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Moga and Batala.
The Punjab Police, through the DGP, had submitted a confidential sealed report prepared by ADGP Ram Singh, which allegedly justified the actions of former Tarn Taran SSP Ravjot Kaur Grewal. She was suspended by the election body on November 8.
The report reportedly implicates the former SSP in the arrests and mentions that the short time gap between the FIR registrations and arrests suggests coordinated police action across districts.
