New Delhi: A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to 21 years in prison after finding her guilty in three corruption cases linked to alleged irregularities in the allocation of land in a government housing project.
Judge Md Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-5 delivered the verdict, sentencing the 78-year-old former prime minister to seven years in each of the three cases related to the Rajuk New Town project in Purvanchal. The court ordered that the sentences will run consecutively.
According to the court, Hasina misused her position during her tenure to influence the allocation process of plots under the government housing scheme. The judgment comes months after her ouster from power, marking one of the most high-profile convictions in the country’s recent political history.
Further legal proceedings, including possible appeals, are expected in the coming days.
