Chandigarh: A CBI court in Chandigarh on Monday granted bail to suspended DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar in a disproportionate assets case, citing the agency’s failure to file a chargesheet within the stipulated 60-day period.
During the hearing, CBI counsel Narinder Singh argued that a 90-day statutory period applies in serious cases such as disproportionate assets. The court, however, rejected the submission and agreed with the defence’s arguments.
Bhullar’s counsel, senior advocate SPS Bhullar along with Yuvraj Dhaliwal and Samrita, said the CBI had failed to present the challan within the mandatory 60 days. They argued that Bhullar was therefore entitled to default bail under the law.
After hearing both sides, the court reserved its order and later allowed the bail plea.
Despite the relief in this case, Bhullar will remain in jail as he is still lodged in connection with another case.
