Jalandhar: President Droupadi Murmu’s scheduled visit to Jalandhar on Friday was cancelled after her flight failed to take off from Amritsar due to adverse weather conditions, officials said.
The President was slated to attend a convocation ceremony at the Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology. She had arrived in Amritsar on Thursday and attended a convocation at Guru Nanak Dev University.
Meanwhile, severe cold conditions continue across Punjab and Chandigarh. The Chandigarh Meteorological Centre issued an Orange Alert for dense fog and cold wave conditions on Thursday.
Punjab recorded near-freezing temperatures for the second time this season. The minimum temperature dipped by 0.3 degrees Celsius, with Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar registering the lowest at 0.9°C. Hoshiarpur and Bathinda recorded 3°C each, while Amritsar logged 3.2°C and Chandigarh 5.3°C.
In view of the harsh weather and poor visibility, school timings have been revised, with classes now starting at 10 am instead of 9 am. Weather officials said minimum temperatures are expected to rise by three to five degrees over the next four days starting Saturday. There is also a possibility of rainfall in the state from January 18 onwards.
