US military targets Iranian drone control site amid rising regional tensions

Washington: The United States military on Thursday carried out what it described as defensive strikes on an Iranian military facility after shooting down four Iranian drones and targeting a ground control station in Bandar Abbas. The development comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia and ongoing diplomatic efforts by US President Donald Trump to secure a deal aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

Trump has claimed that an agreement with Iran is nearing completion and said his administration wants to end the conflict by limiting Tehran’s nuclear programme. However, the proposed strategy has triggered divisions even within Republican circles, with several leaders raising concerns over the terms of any potential settlement.

Despite dismissing suggestions that the upcoming midterm elections could influence his foreign policy decisions, several key issues surrounding a possible Iran deal remain unresolved. These include how Iran would surrender or limit its uranium stockpile and whether the agreement would also address the ongoing Israel-Hezbollah conflict.

At the same time, Trump’s efforts to persuade countries such as Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Pakistan to join the Abraham Accords are facing diplomatic hurdles. Saudi Arabia and several other nations have reportedly insisted that recognition of a Palestinian state remains a precondition for any broader regional agreement.

Experts have also cautioned that sanctions relief for Iran could allow Tehran to strengthen its military infrastructure and continue backing proxy groups such as Hezbollah, potentially increasing instability across the region.
