Amritsar: The Amritsar Rural Police claimed a major breakthrough late Saturday night after the main accused in the murder of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Lucky Oberoi was injured in a police encounter near the Attari border.
Senior police officials said the encounter took place during a late-night operation in the border area following intelligence inputs about the suspect’s movement. The accused has been identified as Shaminder Singh, a resident of Mithapur near Model Town in Jalandhar.
Deputy Inspector General (Border Range) Sandeep Goel, Amritsar Rural SSP, senior police officers including the SP (Detective), DSP Attari Yadvinder Singh, SHO Amandeep Singh and SI Rajbir Singh reached the spot soon after the encounter.
According to police, Shaminder Singh sustained serious injuries during the exchange of fire and was immediately shifted to a hospital for treatment under police custody. His condition is reported to be critical.
Police officials said further questioning will be conducted once the accused is declared medically fit. Senior officers remained present at the encounter site late into the night as investigations continued.
Lucky Oberoi, an AAP leader, was shot dead in Jalandhar a day earlier, triggering heightened security and search operations across multiple districts. The police had launched a manhunt to track down those involved in the killing.
Further details regarding the motive behind the murder and the role of other possible accomplices are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
