Chandigarh: Industrialist-turned-politician Arvind Khanna on Sunday dealt a blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party by joining the Shiromani Akali Dal.
Sources said Khanna had been unhappy with the functioning of the BJP’s state leadership for some time. Citing this dissatisfaction, he resigned from the party and decided to switch sides.
A former senior Congress leader, Khanna had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2022 and was appointed vice-president of its Punjab unit. He contested the 2022 Punjab assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls from the Sangrur constituency on a BJP ticket but lost both contests.
His move is being seen as politically significant ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle in the state.
