Israel strikes Tehran; Iran fires 400 missiles in retaliation, tensions spiral

New Delhi: Israel launched strikes on Iran early Saturday (Indian time), targeting multiple cities including Tehran, triggering swift retaliation from Tehran and sharply escalating tensions in the region.

According to media reports, Iran responded by firing around 400 missiles toward Israel. Iranian forces also reportedly targeted US military bases in Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE.

Key installations targeted

Israel said it struck critical Iranian establishments, including the Intelligence Ministry, Defence Ministry, the office of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and facilities linked to the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran. Following the attacks, Khamenei was reportedly moved to a secure location.

Israel has named its military campaign ‘Lion’s Roar’.

Joint US-Israel action

Al Jazeera, citing US officials, reported that the operation was a joint military action by the United States and Israel. The strikes come amid ongoing tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme.

US President Donald Trump had earlier warned of action against Iran, stating that the objective was to protect the United States and its people from potential threats.

According to Trump, US forces are attempting to neutralise Iran’s missile capabilities and dismantle its missile programme.

The developments mark a significant escalation in hostilities, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.
