Chandigarh: Police has arrested a liquor vendor after a video showing alcohol being served on ice golas in Chandigarh’s Sector 9 market went viral on social media, triggering widespread outrage across the city.
In the viral clip, representatives of a liquor outlet were allegedly seen distributing snow cones topped with liquor of a specific brand to people in public. The so-called “liquor langar” was reportedly organised outside a liquor shop named “Liquor World” in the upscale Sector 9 market area.
According to preliminary reports, police have registered an FIR against the liquor contractors under provisions of the Punjab Excise Act, 1914 and Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police records identified the liquor outlet owner as Rajesh Sachdeva, a resident of Saketri village, who has been taken into custody in connection with the case.
During the investigation, officials found that Smirnoff flavoured vodka had allegedly been used in the ice golas distributed at the spot. Police further stated that one of the vendors was associated with a private company as part of the alleged promotional activity.
The incident has sparked criticism on social media, with many users questioning the use of the word “langar” in connection with the liquor distribution event.
