Charanjit Channi stages protest outside Morinda police station, alleges councillors illegally detained

Chandigarh: Political tensions escalated in Morinda on Friday ahead of the election for the President of the Morinda Municipal Council, with former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi leading a protest outside the Morinda police station.

Channi, accompanied by a large number of supporters and elected councillors, reached the police station before the scheduled election and alleged that the police had illegally detained councillors belonging to his faction.

Speaking to reporters outside the police station, Channi claimed that three Congress councillors had been taken into custody in an attempt to influence the outcome of the municipal council president’s election.

He further alleged that one of the detained councillors had been locked inside a bathroom at the police station to prevent participation in the voting process.

Accusing the ruling party of misusing the police machinery for political purposes, Channi said the alleged detention of councillors was aimed at preventing them from exercising their democratic right to vote in the election.

There was no immediate response from the Punjab Police or the state government regarding the allegations at the time of reporting.
