India imports 60% LPG, supply stable despite global tensions: PM Modi in Lok Sabha

PM Narendra Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday informed the Lok Sabha that India imports nearly 60% of its LPG requirement, while assuring that the government is prioritising domestic consumption and working to boost production.

Addressing concerns over the ongoing West Asia conflict, the Prime Minister said India has diversified its energy sources significantly. “Earlier, India imported energy from 27 countries. Today, this number has increased to 41,” he said.

He added that continuous efforts are being made to ensure smooth supply of petrol and diesel across the country, despite global disruptions.

Highlighting preparedness, Modi said India currently holds over 5.3 million metric tonnes of strategic petroleum reserves, with plans to increase this to 6.5 million metric tonnes.

The government is also focused on minimising the impact on citizens, ensuring that disruptions in LPG supply due to the conflict do not cause hardship to the public.

On the education front, the Prime Minister said steps are being taken to support students affected in conflict-hit regions, especially after CBSE examinations for Classes 10 and 12 were cancelled in some areas.

He asserted that the government remains fully alert and prepared to take all necessary measures to safeguard the country’s energy security and public welfare.
