Chandigarh: In a major breakthrough, Punjab Police has arrested alleged mastermind Amritpal Singh Mehro in the sensational murder case of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari after his deportation from the UAE.
Mehro had been declared a proclaimed offender by a Bathinda court in February 2026 for not joining the investigation. He was earlier detained by Sharjah Police in January 2026 during visa-related questioning.
According to the latest update, a Bathinda Police team led by a DSP-rank officer secured his custody from UAE authorities and brought him back to India by flight. He will now be produced before a court.
Punjab DGP, in a statement on X, said the arrest was made with the assistance of the Counter Intelligence wing’s Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC) and central agencies. Police tracked Mehro’s location in the Middle East and initiated the deportation process.
He was formally arrested upon arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi in the early hours of April 10, 2026.
The case dates back to June 2025, when Kanchan Kumari was lured to Bathinda on the pretext of a promotional event. She was strangled to death on the night of June 9–10, and her body was recovered three days later from a car parked at Adesh University.
Police said the motive behind the murder was the victim’s social media content, which the accused allegedly considered objectionable and claimed had hurt Sikh sentiments.
