Chandigarh: India’s President Droupadi Murmu has granted an appointment to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on May 5. The Chief Minister confirmed that he will meet the President at 12 noon along with party MLAs.
The meeting comes in the backdrop of a major political development where seven Rajya Sabha MPs of the Aam Aadmi Party recently quit the party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Following the defections, Mann had sought time from the President to press for cancellation of the MPs’ membership. The Punjab government intends to raise the issue formally during the meeting, arguing that the move amounts to a betrayal of the party mandate.
The development is being seen as a key step in the ongoing political tussle between AAP and BJP after the high-profile Rajya Sabha shift.
