Chandigarh: Voting for the Haryana municipal elections began at 8 am on Saturday, with enthusiastic participation reported from polling stations across the state.
Long queues of voters were seen outside several polling booths since early morning, with youths, women, senior citizens and specially-abled voters turning out in large numbers to cast their votes.
The administration has put in place elaborate security arrangements to ensure peaceful polling.
Elections being held for mayoral and ward seats
Polling is underway for the election of mayors and ward members in the municipal corporations of Ambala, Panchkula and Sonipat.
Voting is also taking place for the Rewari municipal council and municipal committees in Dharuhera, Sampla and Uklana.
Over 8.71 lakh voters eligible to vote
According to the State Election Commission, more than 8.71 lakh voters are eligible to cast their votes in these elections, including over 4.21 lakh women voters.
Additional police deployment has been made at several sensitive polling booths, while CCTV cameras are being used to monitor the voting process.
Haryana declares paid leave for voters
The Haryana government has announced paid leave for voters in the concerned areas to encourage maximum participation in the democratic process.
The counting of votes for the municipal elections will take place on May 13.
