Air India to cut domestic flights by up to 22% amid rising fuel costs

New Delhi: Air India will reduce its domestic flight operations by up to 22 per cent amid rising fuel prices and increasing operational costs.

Sources said the financially stressed airline has also cut nearly 27 per cent of its international flight operations as it continues to face mounting economic pressure.

According to available details, Air India currently operates around 4,400 weekly flights, including nearly 3,600 domestic and 800 international services.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the airline said that after previously announced changes to selected international services between June and August 2026, it has now temporarily rationalised operations on certain domestic routes as well. This includes reducing flight frequency on selected sectors during the same period.

Sources indicated that around 20 to 22 per cent of domestic flights are likely to be reduced. The airline said the decision was taken due to the continued impact of elevated fuel prices on overall operations.

Air India further stated that it will continue to closely monitor demand and operational conditions so that flight frequencies can be restored once the situation stabilises.
