New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged citizens across the country to exercise maximum caution amid the continuing rise in temperatures and severe heatwave conditions affecting several parts of India.
In a series of posts shared on social media platform X, the Prime Minister stressed that staying hydrated is extremely important during extreme weather conditions. He warned that children, elderly people and those working outdoors are especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
Modi said early symptoms of heat exhaustion should never be ignored, as they can quickly become dangerous and lead to heatstroke.
“Temperatures are rising sharply in different parts of India and this is creating several challenges. This heat is severe for all of us, and I urge everyone to take as many precautions as possible,” the Prime Minister said.
He appealed to people to keep drinking water regularly, carry water whenever stepping outside and also help others remain hydrated. According to him, small acts of kindness during such weather conditions can save lives.
PM advises people to monitor heat-related symptoms
The Prime Minister asked citizens to remain alert for symptoms such as dizziness, nausea and extreme fatigue caused by excessive heat. He advised that anyone feeling unwell or weak should immediately be moved to a cool and shaded place.
He also encouraged people to help those affected by providing water, ORS and other essentials to prevent dehydration and heatstroke.
Appeal to care for elderly and animals
Modi further urged citizens to regularly check on elderly family members and loved ones during the ongoing heatwave. He advised people to encourage senior citizens to stay hydrated, avoid going outdoors during peak afternoon hours and take adequate rest.
The Prime Minister also appealed to people to care for birds and animals during the scorching weather. He suggested keeping bowls of water outside homes, balconies, rooftops, shops and offices to help thirsty birds survive the extreme heat.
Severe heatwave grips several parts of India
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several regions of the country are currently witnessing severe heatwave conditions. On Tuesday, Banda city in Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest temperature in the country at 47.4 degrees Celsius.
The IMD classifies temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius in plains as a heatwave, while temperatures crossing 47 degrees Celsius fall under the category of a severe heatwave.
