Actor-politician Vijay takes oath as Tamil Nadu chief minister

New Delhi: Vijay, leader of the legislature party of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Saturday.

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay during a grand ceremony held at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.

Historic political shift in Tamil Nadu

The swearing-in marks the beginning of a new political era in Tamil Nadu. For the first time in nearly six decades, a party other than the Dravidian majors — Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) or All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) — has come to power in the state.

Thousands of Vijay’s supporters and fans gathered inside and outside the stadium to celebrate the occasion, with massive crowds and festive scenes reported across Chennai.

Vijay to prove majority by May 13

Following his swearing-in, Vijay is expected to convene the first meeting of his cabinet.

He will also have to prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly by May 13.

Leaders expected to take oath as ministers in the new cabinet include Bussy N Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, K A Sengottaiyan, K G Arunraj, P Venkataramanan, CTR Nirmal Kumar, A Rajmohan and K T Prabhu.

Heavy security arrangements across Chennai

Authorities have put in place extensive security arrangements around the stadium and across Chennai amid huge public gatherings and celebrations by TVK supporters.

The political development is being seen as a major turning point in Tamil Nadu politics, with Vijay emerging as a significant new force in the state’s political landscape.
