Court frames charges against MP Amritpal Singh in Ajnala police station attack case

Chandigarh: A local court on Thursday framed charges against Amritpal Singh in connection with the February 2023 attack on the Ajnala Police Station.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Parinder Singh dropped charges under the Arms Act and sections related to destruction of evidence after defence counsel Rituraj Sandhu argued that no weapon had been recovered from the accused.

However, the court framed several serious charges against Amritpal Singh, including attempt to murder, causing grievous injuries, obstructing public servants from performing duty, criminal conspiracy, damaging government property and issuing death threats while leading an unlawful assembly.

During the hearing, the defence maintained that police had wrongly invoked provisions related to illegal weapons and destruction of evidence.

The case pertains to the February 2023 incident in which Amritpal Singh and his supporters allegedly stormed the Ajnala police station to pressure police into releasing their aide Lovepreet Toofan, who had been arrested in an attempted murder case.

Following the incident, Punjab Police launched a statewide crackdown and registered multiple cases related to the attack.
