Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday stayed the cutting and pruning of trees for the proposed Tribune Chowk flyover project in Chandigarh, effectively putting the process on hold for the time being.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjeev Berry observed that the matter had already been heard and was likely to be decided finally in the near future.
The bench said that under such circumstances, it would be appropriate to restrain the UT Administration and other concerned authorities from cutting or pruning any mango or other trees located around Tribune Chowk until further orders.
At the same time, the court clarified that the interim directions would remain subject to the final outcome of the petition.
The order came during the hearing of a petition challenging the proposed flyover project at Tribune Chowk. The petitioners have argued that the project violates the city’s heritage character and planned urban framework.
