Chandigarh: An undertrial prisoner lodged in Hoshiarpur jail was shot dead on Saturday after he allegedly attacked a police personnel with a knife during a medical visit at the Civil Hospital.
According to police officials, the accused, identified as Naseeb, repeatedly attacked a policeman on the face and hand with a sharp weapon after being brought to the hospital for medical examination.
Police said the situation escalated when the inmate allegedly attempted to snatch the revolver of the injured police personnel, following which retaliatory firing was carried out.
The accused sustained bullet injuries and was admitted to the Civil Hospital in critical condition, where he later died during treatment.
Officials said Naseeb was lodged in jail in connection with a narcotics case and was a resident of Kotla Gaunspur village in Hoshiarpur district. Police further revealed that his father, Shashi, is also currently lodged in jail in an NDPS-related case.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine how the accused obtained the knife and whether any lapse or assistance was involved in smuggling the weapon inside.
