Chandigarh: The CIA staff has arrested Harbhajan Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Hoshiarpur Central Jail, in connection with an alleged drug trafficking racket operating inside the prison.
The action comes after an inmate, Manpreet Manna, released a viral video alleging that prisoners were being used to sell narcotics inside the jail. He also claimed that several illegal activities were taking place within the prison premises.
In the video, the inmate displayed a packet which he claimed contained “Ice” (methamphetamine), a synthetic drug. He further alleged that unidentified men and women were brought into prison barracks during the night.
Following the allegations, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by SP Major Singh was constituted to probe the matter.
According to the investigation, an organised network involved in smuggling narcotics and mobile phones into the jail was operating from within the prison. Preliminary findings allegedly link Deputy Superintendent Harbhajan Singh, a jail warder and several smugglers operating both inside and outside the prison to the racket.
Police are continuing the investigation to identify other individuals allegedly involved in the network.
