New Delhi: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has reportedly invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the funeral ceremonies of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to diplomatic sources. However, the Government of India has not yet officially confirmed receiving or accepting the invitation.
According to reports, the funeral and memorial ceremonies for Khamenei are scheduled to be held from July 4 to July 9 across multiple cities in Iran.
The ceremonies are expected to begin in Tehran, where the initial state and religious observances will take place. This will be followed by additional religious events in the holy city of Qom. The final rites are reportedly scheduled for July 9 in Mashhad, Khamenei’s birthplace, where he is expected to be laid to rest.
Diplomatic sources said the invitation has been extended as part of Iran’s outreach to key international leaders and partners ahead of the ceremonies.
There has been no official statement from New Delhi regarding Prime Minister Modi’s possible participation in the events. Any decision on representation at the ceremonies is expected to be announced through diplomatic channels in the coming days.
The reported invitation comes amid ongoing diplomatic engagement between India and Iran, which share longstanding ties in areas including trade, connectivity, energy cooperation and regional affairs.
