Mohali woman throws three children into canal in Ropar, held after suicide bid

Chandigarh: A woman from Mohali allegedly threw her three children into a canal in Punjab’s Ropar district before attempting to end her own life by jumping into the water. All three children are feared dead, while the woman survived and has been taken into police custody.

The accused has been identified as Shakuntala alias Suman, a resident of Mataur in Mohali. Police said she allegedly pushed her three children—10-year-old Tapish, seven-year-old Tanvi and four-year-old Nitin—into the canal before jumping in herself.

Rescue teams recovered the bodies of two children, while search operations are continuing to trace the third child.

According to police, the woman had reportedly travelled from Mohali to Ropar with the intention of ending her life. However, she managed to swim back to the canal bank, where she was later apprehended by the police.

The children’s grandfather, Ram Babu, alleged that Shakuntala’s behaviour had been abnormal for some time and claimed she had previously made statements about harming the children.

Family members said the household had been facing prolonged domestic tensions and frequent disputes. They claimed they were aware of the ongoing conflicts but never imagined the situation would end in such a tragedy.

Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances and motive behind the incident.
