RTI activist murder solved within hours; cousin arrested in Phagwara killing

Chandigarh: Police have claimed to have solved the murder of RTI activist Simranjit Singh within hours of the incident near Law Gate in Phagwara. The victim was shot dead near Om-3 Apartments in Maheru village on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference, Jalandhar Range DIG Navin Singla said the victim’s cousin, Sharanjit Singh, has been arrested in connection with the murder.

According to the police, Simranjit Singh and Sharanjit Singh were not only relatives but were also partners in a real estate business. During the investigation, police found that Sharanjit allegedly owed around Rs 5 lakh to the deceased.

Police said both men had travelled to the Maheru area in separate vehicles to inspect a property. Sharanjit Singh reportedly arrived in a Swift car along with five associates. During the visit, an argument broke out between the two sides over financial dealings and other business-related issues.

Investigators said the dispute escalated into violence, culminating in the fatal attack on Simranjit Singh. Based on evidence collected during the probe, police arrested Sharanjit Singh and launched efforts to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects allegedly involved in the incident.

The murder had triggered concern in the area after the RTI activist was shot near the busy Law Gate locality. Police said further investigation is underway to establish the exact sequence of events and the role of other individuals present at the scene.
