Security cover of Harbhajan Singh upgraded, downgraded within days after leaving party

New Delhi: A day after the Punjab and Haryana High Court questioned the deployment of 23 Punjab Police personnel for the security of Rajya Sabha MP and former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, reports have revealed that his security cover was first upgraded from Y-category to Z-category and later reduced to zero security within a very short period after he left a political party.

According to reports, after the Punjab government withdrew his security cover in April 2026, the Ministry of Home Affairs deployed personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) outside his residence.

Initially, Harbhajan Singh had been provided Y-category security, which included eight personnel, among them two Punjab Police commandos. The cover was later upgraded to Z-category security involving around 22 personnel, including four to six commandos.

Harbhajan alleges security withdrawn without threat review

Harbhajan Singh reportedly alleged that his security in both Delhi and Punjab was withdrawn arbitrarily and vindictively without any fresh threat assessment or prior notice.

He further claimed that after Aam Aadmi Party workers were allowed to protest outside his residence, a crowd vandalised his house with slogans branding him a “traitor” and attempted to break the main gate.

Meanwhile, a senior police officer said that after the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in May 2022, strict instructions were issued not to publicly disclose details regarding the security cover provided to individuals.

Officials said Harbhajan Singh currently remains under the protection of central paramilitary forces.
