New Delhi: Chief Minister Vijay on Sunday announced three major initiatives linked to his election promises, focusing on free electricity, women’s safety and anti-drug enforcement in Tamil Nadu.
Vijay formally assumed office as chief minister after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), secured victory in the Assembly elections held on April 23 and later crossed the majority mark of 118 seats with support from other parties.
200 units of free electricity announced
Soon after assuming office, Vijay signed his first official orders announcing 200 units of free electricity for domestic consumers.
According to the government order, the benefit will be available to households whose total electricity consumption does not exceed 500 units over a two-month billing cycle.
The move is being seen as one of the flagship welfare measures of the new government.
‘Singa Pen Special Action Force’ for women’s safety
To strengthen women’s safety and boost confidence among women, the state government has announced the formation of the “Singa Pen Special Action Force” across Tamil Nadu.
The specialised force will be equipped with modern infrastructure and trained personnel to deal with crimes and complaints related to women’s safety.
“Singa Pen”, meaning “lioness”, is a term commonly used in Tamil to describe brave and empowered women.
According to the state government, the initiative aims to ensure faster and more effective action in cases involving women’s security.
65 anti-narcotic task force units to be set up
The Vijay government has also announced the establishment of 65 Anti-Narcotic Task Force units to curb drug-related crimes and intensify action against offenders.
Under the plan, one unit will be established in every district, while the remaining units will function in police districts across nine major cities of the state.
The move is aimed at strengthening enforcement against narcotics and improving coordination in tackling drug networks across Tamil Nadu.
